Quick Tweaks for Windows XP

We've done literally hundreds of XP installs over the years, and there's a basic set of tweaks that we always make immediately after the install. These aren't drastic changes, just small changes to settings that we feel are worth doing.

System Tweaks

Let's start with a few system-wide changes. When you first log in, Windows offers to configure automatic updates for you.

Now for the recycle bin. It's purpose it to store deleted files in case you change your mind. But the default size is 10%, which is WAY too large. On a 200GB hard drive 20GB would we reserved, and could eventually fill up, wasting space.

To change the alloted space, simply right-click on the Recycle Bin, select properties, then move the slider to the desired percentage. As we said, not an enormous change, but worth giving a few seconds of attention to.

User Account Configuration

These settings are unique to each user, so you will need to make the changes to each login separately.
